Because Internet safety for kids is so important, we launched this site (in part) to help pre-teens learn responsibility and safe Internet practices before they take flight as teens. These are some statistics flying around we think you want to be aware of from a 2007 Teen Internet Survey conducted by Children’s Advocate John Walsh, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and Cox Communications.

• 71% of adolescents have set up online profiles
• 69% of these adolescents get online personal messages from people they do not know on a regular basis. Even more scarily, most of them do not tell a parent or another trusted adult about it.
• 64% of youth post photos or videos of themselves online, and almost all don’t really think about who might be viewing them. 56% post info about where they live. Nearly 10% has posted their cell phone number online.
• Overall, 19% of adolescents report they have been harassed or bullied online, Girls are more likely to be harassed or bullied than boys.
• Adolescents with parents who have talked to them “a lot” about online safety are less likely to consider going to meet with someone they met on the Internet.

Many members of our mission control team are parents, too. We designed KidzRocket based on what we wanted for our now adolescent explorers, but didn't see on any other social networking sites built with our child's Internet security in the forefront. Our tweens want to go off and boldly explore new worlds but, it's a fact, complete freedom just isn't safe. Our responsibility to them as parents was to design this site to protect them while still granting them freedom that is controlled, yet, doesn't feel confined.
